WHAT MATTERS

What Counts Toward Your Belt?

Volume. The total number of training sessions you have logged. The IBJJF doesn't set a hard count, but most professors look for consistent volume over time before promoting.

Consistency. Showing up week after week matters more than training hard for a month and disappearing. The IBJJF system rewards practitioners who train regularly across years.

Time in grade. The minimum months you must spend at your current belt before you are eligible for the next one. This is the only requirement that is officially measured.

CONTEXT

Why IBJJF Requirements Matter

The IBJJF graduation system exists to keep BJJ honest. Without minimums, a school could promote a beginner to black belt in a year. With minimums, the rank actually means something — it represents real time on the mat.

Meeting the minimum doesn't guarantee promotion. It means you are eligible. Your professor still makes the call based on your technical level, your consistency, and your contribution to the academy.

Tracking your time in grade against IBJJF minimums gives you an objective baseline. Combined with volume and consistency tracking, you get a clear picture of where you actually stand — not where you wish you were.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the IBJJF graduation system?

The IBJJF graduation system is the official belt progression framework used by the International Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Federation. It defines minimum time at each belt, minimum age requirements, and the stripe progression system.

What is the minimum age for a BJJ blue belt?

The IBJJF requires a minimum age of 16 years old to receive a blue belt. Practitioners under 16 train under the youth belt system (gray, yellow, orange, green) until they qualify for the adult color belt system.

How many stripes are there on each BJJ belt?

Each colored belt (white, blue, purple, brown) has up to 4 stripes before promotion to the next belt. Black belt uses a degree system from 1st to 6th degree (red and black), then 7th to 8th degree (red and white), then 9th and 10th degree (red).

Can I get promoted faster than IBJJF minimums?

No. The IBJJF minimums are absolute floors. Your professor can hold you longer than the minimum but cannot promote you sooner. Most practitioners take 2-3x the minimum time in practice.

What does the IBJJF require to recognize a black belt?

The IBJJF requires the practitioner to have completed minimum time at white, blue, purple, and brown belts (totaling at least 6.5 years), be at least 19 years old, and be promoted by an IBJJF-recognized black belt instructor.
